What you see is flowers. What holds them is a cage.

THE OGIRIN

The first rose garden in the world exists because a wife told her husband to come out of the darkroom. Jules Gravereaux started collecting in 1894. By 1910 he had every known form of the genus Rosa — eight thousand of them. In 1914 his village changed its name to L'Haÿ-les-Roses.

But a climbing rose has no rigid stem. Left alone it ends on the ground. So the architect built the garden as ironwork first — arches, pylons, panels of lattice — and trained the roses onto it. What you see is flowers. What holds them is a cage.

TREILLAGE. Take out the black and there is no shape. Only flowers, on the floor.

THE MOTIF

Roseraie de L'Haÿ (Roseraie du Val-de-Marne), designed 1899 by Édouard André for Jules Gravereaux. Black trellis lines over a crowded floral field, hand-sculpted roses at the bust.
