THE ORIGIN

Erechtheion, Athens, fifth century BC. A temple that refused to level the sacred rock beneath it, and bent itself to the stone instead. Inside it stood a well of salt water, and ancient writers recorded that in a south wind it answered with the sound of waves. Outside, six women carry the roof: the folds of the chiton repeat the fluting of a column, and a heavy braid reinforces the most fragile point — the neck.

Beauty doing the work of structure.

THE MOTIF

Central portico, starfish, shells, coral and volute forms across the field.

Erechtheion, Acropolis of Athens, 421-406 BC
